Tag d. Pressefreiheit / World Press Freedom Day May 3

Nur wenige wissen es, aber so wie es einen Tag der Jogginghose gibt, begeht man am 3. Mai eben den Tag der Pressefreiheit. Für uns in Zentraleuropa mag die Pressefreiheit ganz selbstverständlich scheinen, doch in vielen Ländern herrschen Zensur und staatlich-geführte Nachrichtenagenturen (auf der ganzen Welt gibt es derzeit nur etwa 20 (!) unabhängige Nachrichtenagenturen, eine davon ist z.B. die österreichische APA). Wie ich schon vor einigen Monaten geschrieben habe, sterben jährlich zig Journalisten und Medienleute, weil sie kritische Berichterstattung dem regierungsfreundlichen Blabla vorziehen…Der Tag der Pressefreiheit soll daran erinnern, dass in puncto freier Presse auf der ganzen Welt noch viel passieren muss.

Many won’t know, but as there’s the International Day of Jogging-Pants, there’s also the Wolrd Press Freedom Day on May 3rd. For people living in Central Europe, press freedom may appear quasi naturally, but in fact there are still cenorship and state-owned news agencies in many countries (all over the world there are only approx. 20 (!) independent news agencies right now, e.g. the Austrian APA). As I wrote several months ago, dozens of journalists are killed each year because they do critical reporting instead of pro-government blabla… The World Press Freedom Day shall make us aware of the fact that in terms of worldwide press freedom there’s still a lot of work to do .
